For our September, 2002 sketch hike we went to Tennessee Valley Road and to our surprise it was actually sunny all day. We headed straight for the beach to sketch panoranic vistas, large rock formations, ocean waves and even some birds. One of our members even did a plant sketch of a dudleya. I think al most all of us took our shoes off and one our group headed straight for the water.
The rocks are various colors - light ochre, shades of red to dark brown or purple being the most obvious. In contrast the water varies from gray to blue to green depending on prevailing weather conditions. This combination of colors makes for a great contrasts.
Being next to the coast, there are at least a few flowers blooming all year round. The Dudleya is is an especially interesting plant to draw - it is a great study of complementary colors - the leaves are grey blue green and succulent. situated in the cracks of orange red rock. Below are some pictures and drawings of some of the ocean scenes we saw at the beach at the end of Tennessee Valley Road.
